The Shiba Inu is an ancient spitz-type breed that originated in the mountainous areas of Japan. The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the native Japanese breeds. The Shiba Inu is one of the oldest dog breeds dating back to the 3rd Century B.C. The Shiba Inu was used hunt small wild game, boar, bear, and flush birds from the brush. Like many breeds, this breed declined after World War II, but breeding programs have been successful and this breed is not considered rare.

The Shiba Inu was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1992 as part of the Non-Sporting Group.

The Shiba Inu has a double coat that is waterproof and weatherproof. The undercoat is soft and thick. The outer coat is clean, coarse, stiff, and short. The tail hair is slightly a longer and ends with a brush. This coat benefits from a regular brushing with a stiff brush to remove dead hair a couple times a week. This breed is a seasonal shedder.

The coat of the Shiba Inu comes in the following colors: red, red with little black overlay, black with tan markings, or sesame with red markings. The coat may also be cream in color but this color is not considered acceptable in the show ring. Markings in urajino (a cream to white color) should appear on the muzzle, throat, stomach, and chest. There may be white on the legs, above the eyes, and tip of tail. The undercoat colors are cream, buff, or gray.

When you see Shiba Inu dog puppies for sale and make the decision to make a Shiba Inu a member of your family, you will find this breed to be clean, quiet, has a mischievous sense of humor, and a wonderful companion.

The Shiba Inu does best living where they have access to an average-sized year; however, the Shiba Inu is moderately active indoors and will do fine living in an apartment as long as they receive sufficient exercise. This breed is calm indoors and very lively outdoors.
