The Shiba Inu is an ancient spitz-type breed that originated in the mountainous areas of Japan. The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the native Japanese breeds. The Shiba Inu is one of the oldest dog breeds dating back to the 3rd Century B.C. The Shiba Inu was used hunt small wild game, boar, bear, and flush birds from the brush. The coat of the Shiba Inu comes in the following colors: red, red with little black overlay, black with tan markings, or sesame with red markings. The coat may also be cream in color but this color is not considered acceptable in the show ring. Markings in urajino (a cream to white color) should appear on the muzzle, throat, stomach, and chest. There may be white on the legs, above the eyes, and tip of tail. The undercoat colors are cream, buff, or gray.
